Statue toppled of ‘shameful’ faculty founder

A statue in Toronto has been toppled of a person who helped create a faculty system which forcibly assimilated indigenous individuals.

Egerton Ryerson was an architect of Canada’s residential colleges, which kidnapped greater than 150,000 indigenous kids, who have been typically not allowed to talk their language. Many have been mistreated and abused.

At Ryerson College, protesters gathered to recollect the 215 indigenous kids present in a mass grave on the Kamloops Indian Residential Faculty.
